The first day of our trip was actually a “free” day. We got to Quito the day before we were to
head out to the Galapagos Islands so that we could get a day’s “breather” and
get used to the weather, etc., before we headed out to the boat and the
islands. We used that day to do a tour
of the city of Quito. Quito is pretty
much right on the equator, and the temperatures hold pretty steady all year
‘round, between 50 – 70 degrees. Why so
mild on the equator? Well, Quito’s
elevation is 9200 feet, so we were quite a bit above sea level where it was
warmer.
Basilica del Voto Nacional
Ecuador is very much a Catholic country, so there are many,
many churches in the cities. This church
was the first that we stopped at and one of the cool things on the outside of
the church were the gargoyles – they were some of the animals found in the
Galapagos Islands…
Basilica del Voto Nacional – Iguana gargoyle
…including Iguanas (altho they weren’t nearly as scary
looking in real life!)
Basilica del Voto Nacional – Giant Tortoises
…and the Giant Tortoises!
Side Sanctuary at Basilica del Voto Nacional
This was the only church we visited where we could go inside
and take photographs. However, after I
took this image, Jeff pointed out a sign that said I wasn’t supposed to
photograph this particular part of the church – sorry! I didn’t use a flash so I didn’t disturb
anyone who might have been in there praying.
One Wing of the Basilica del Voto Nacional
One of the most impressive things about this church were the
tall, tall ceilings and the arched niches and side halls in the church. It was really amazing and created a feeling
of respect for not only the original builders,
but also for those who do the daily upkeep of such a beautiful building.
Enjoy!
