Nature on the Carlito Springs Trail

It was rather amazing how much Nature was in her glory on the Carlito Springs Trail.  Altho there are quite a few images in this blog posting, I really did narrow it down to my absolute favorites!

Ouch – Prickly Pear Cactus
I have taken many, many images of Prickly Pear Cactus in the years that we’ve lived here in New Mexico, but this one has to be one of, if not the best, image I’ve captured of this cool cactus.  I love the soft lighting that existed here.  It’s also a great contrast to the very sharp and (relatively speaking) very long spikes on the cactus!
Purple Blooms at the Springs
After hiking up the trail, which is very dry and definitely not what one would call “lush”, it was such a delightful change of pace to reach the springs, and see all the vibrant greens, cool crisp looking water, and the delicate purple blooms that rimmed the various springs at the top of the trail.
Top of the Trail
I just loved how clear the water was in the springs!  You can clearly see right down to the bottom of the pool in this image!  It almost makes one want to dangle one’s toes in what must be some nice cool water…..but if we all did that, the water probably wouldn’t be that clean and clear!
Out of the Rust
For some reason, I have always thought of daffodils as being a bit of a delicate flower.  Well, this one certainly set me straight.  I can’t really think of much more of an inhospitable environment than a bed of rusty cans!  Yet, here it was.  I think the rust cans were left over from when folks either lived or visited the community that’s at the top of the trail.  No recent littering!
Sunshine Blooms
You’ll see these blooms again as a photo sketch/painting in another post, but here’s the “straight shot” as I think of it!  I really loved that I was able to get down to the level of the flowers (they were growing on a bit of a ledge almost at my eye level) and just fill the frame with such happy looking flowers!
Coming Out of the Shadow
I don’t know what this little yellow flower is, but I loved how persistent it looked, growing in the exact location!  It is peeking out from between the “leaves” of a banana yucca plant that was sort of growing out from under a piece of a tree branch that happened to fall there.  You can see just a bit of the tree branch in the upper left corner of the image.
Moss Rock
Isn’t this a cool image?  It’s a close up of moss growing on a rock along the trail.  Now, I have always thought of moss as something that grows in a darker, damp place, but this rock is out in the bright sunshine, nowhere close to the springs!
Barrel Cactus Ready to Bloom
We don’t tend to see a lot of barrel cactus growing in the area where we live, but I did see a number of them on this trail.  People don’t generally think of cactus as a blooming plant, but they do!  We’re a bit early to catch this one blooming, but you can see the buds of what promise to be red flowers that will be in full bloom in a week or so.  Too bad we’ll be many miles away from here at that time, so this is as close as I’ll come this year to seeing a barrel cactus bloom!
Enjoy!

Along the Carlito Springs Trail

The trail up to Carlito Springs had not only signs of nature, but also signs of what existed when Carlito Springs was inhabited.  Here are a couple of scenes along the way to the top of the trail (and the springs)…..
Country Wall
When the trail led to what seems to be the old road that led to Carlito Springs, and I saw this tree and the wonderful rock wall, I just had to stop and admire it.  And, then, of course, I had to look for the best angle to capture an old fashioned country road.  We’ll have to go back during the summer months (early before it gets too hot!!), so that the tree is full of green leaves!
Old Wagon Wheels
As I got closer to the buildings at Carlito Springs, I saw these old wagon wheels on a level above me.  I’m not certain why they were there back in the day, but they had so much character, I just had to capture them!
Enjoy!

Deserted Buildings at Carlito Springs

If you follow my blog, you know I have a soft spot for deserted buildings, cabins, whatever!  Well, at the top of the trail, in Carlito Springs, there were a number of deserted buildings.  It’s definitely worth a return trip, but for now, these images will have to suffice!
Old Carlito Springs
As I looked down the dirt road that ran in front of these buildings, I was reminded of the old mining town of Kennecott, Alaska that we visited last summer.  No, I didn’t see any evidence of mining in Carlito Springs.  But the old buildings and the dirt road gave it a similar feel.   It surprised me of how much New Mexico could look like Alaska!  I finished this off as a photo sketch, almost like an entry in an art journal.
The Open Door
The wood on this door really captured my attention.  Both Miki and Jeff went into the little building.  It was made of something that looked like cinder blocks.  Jeff thought it might have been an old power building, where the electricity, etc., equipment was kept.  All I know is that I really liked the door!
The Old Work Shed
A few steps away, this old work shed beckoned.  I peeked inside and could imagine someone working away while looking up periodically enjoying the wonderful view out the window.  What did they do here – work on equipment, store supplies, or….?  It’s always great for the imagination to take a peek at a snippet of a time gone by.
Enjoy!

Inspiration on Carlito Springs Trail

There were a few images that just needed a quote to make them complete.  Take a look....

Grow

I just loved the look of this small twig that had started to grow out of the old, twisted trunk of the pinon tree.  When I saw the quote, I thought it was perfect - it all reminds me of one of my wonderful nieces, Marikate.  She was a very premature little girl, and has had many difficulties to overcome in her life.  But she is our family miracle, and will turn 24 in just a few weeks!

Still Hanging On

Walking down the trail, I noticed a tree that still had most of its leaves still hanging on.  As I was perusing thru some quotes, I came across this one and thought it was perfect or this image.  Never give up!

Touch of Spring

Sometimes some very pretty treasures can only be seen by looking down.  That was certainly the case with these little beauties!  I can't help but think of how many people missed this wonderful touch of spring because they were looking at the grand vista.  There's beauty everywhere!

Enjoy!
